free-roam Ellaria is a semi-realistic wolf rpg with a unique free-roam society. The free-roam concept first arose when Ellaria was a wild horse rpg. In many rpgs, it seemed impossible for individuals to explore the world they live in without being harassed for "trespassing." Instead of allowing packs to claim a specific territory and only allowing pack members to inhabit that location, we have created a world where multiple packs reside in the same regions and must share the territories within their native region. Having to share does not mean that all packs live amongst one another in complete harmony. Conflicts may arise when two packs encounter one another, or they may choose to be mutual and temporarily occupy the same space for as long as they can stand to. Not all wolves are willing to share, however, and enemies may be quick to make. Not to mention that lone wolves may also be a threatening sight. Some may just pass by, while others may cause mischief.
classic ranks As for the makeup of the packs, we use common rank names such as alpha, beta, omega, etc. The subordinates, or subalterns, are the pack members. These wolves range from hunters and loyal protectors of the pack, to pup-sitters and messengers. We chose not to use more advanced ranks so that all pack members are of equal rank, but are given the opportunity to be what they want (a skilled hunter, loyal defender, storyteller and pup-sitter, etc.). This way new wolves who join the pack become the same rank as wolves who have been apart of the pack for a longer amount of time. This gives new wolves a better chance of making a good name for themselves. It is not always about how long you've been with the pack, but how great an asset you may be. Some wolves deem more valuable than others. It all depends on what that each character does to gain a certain reputation among the pack. Although the wolves who make up the pack are of equal rank, they may not be of equal reputation with the rest of the pack (or more significantly, the leaders). The purpose of this system is to keep even the veterans on their toes when new members arrive, or those new members might rise above them in reputation.
free-play Ultimately, Ellaria is a free-play rpg where members can create their own unique plots rather than go along with a predetermined storyline. A history will develop as characters and their stories progress and expand in Ellaria. Events will be set in motion by both unexpected and/or preplanned occurences that will effect many, if not all members on the site. These events will often be announced so that all members are aware of the occurrence and may participate, whether in the official event thread, or by creating their own.
diversity Ellaria itself is about the size of the United States, and is home to a diversity of environments ranging from icy tundras to scorching deserts, and even from rocky mountains to lush rainforests. This gives members the opportunity to think outside the box. Instead of playing your average Timber Wolf, you can now play a variety of species that may be more suited for different parts of the regions. If you're not sure what species you might find in each region, take a look at our Wolf Species thread. Although some species may not survive in certain habitats (such as an Arabian wolf in the Arctic), it is ultimately the member's choice whether to play a wolf native to certain geographical locations.
